LiPo for Model Rail
Despite their bad reputation, LiPo cells and batteries are safe for use in model rail so long as some simple rules are followed:
- never charge above 4.2V per cell, use a decent charger
- always balance charge multi-cell batteries
- never discharge below 3V per cell (the Deltang receivers cut off the motor at 3V per cell)
- never short, use an inline resettable fuse as close to the cell/battery as possible
- never puncture or subject to blunt force trauma
- never subject to a temperature below 0C or above 50C
All of these LiPo are fitted with a 2.5A resettable fuse to protect the cells in the event of a wiring fault (or operator error/fumble!). Thus, the max charge or discharge current for any of these cells/batteries is 2.5A.
The smaller (< 1000mAh) multi-cell LiPo are fitted with a single Molex 2mm power and charge/balance connector. This is wired using 'Nine Eagles' convention which has pin 1 negative. The wiring colours are:
